Wishing Jacquie, David, Natalie, Robyn and family a long life. The first of our lot to
go was Timmy Marcuson 33 years ago. Now Pete is there also. It is very sad indeed.

Wow, That’s a list of names and faces that I haven’t hear/seen in a long time!!

40 years is a long time. So here’s the short version:

Left SA in 1978 and got a Dutch passport. Travelled around India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Europe and USA  for 2 years. Met my German shiksa wife, Chris, in
Kathmandu, Nepal in Aug 1978, and we have been together ever since. Then took a “temporary” job running a small hotel in Amsterdam. A SA friend (Stephen
Davis) wanted to invest in Europe and bought that hotel. This grew to another hotel as well, and eventually we sold those 2 and bought a beautiful large house
which we turned into a 5 star B&B for business people. 25 years later we finally got it together to leave Amsterdam!

As I have always been into music, I also got involved in the music business and was managing bands, touring with them, promoting tours of Holland for various
African and indie bands, and writing for a music paper. Meanwhile we did not want to ever really stay in Europe, so travelled the world looking at places to
eventually live. Due to my views and bolshie attitude I was banned by the Apartheid government and couldn’t return to SA.

Eventually in 1995 I returned to SA, was detained, and within 2 hours had my ban lifted and was welcomed back by the immigration officials. We then found
ourselves looking at where to go for our next holidays, and although we had the whole world to choose from, always ended up choosing SA. This gave the added
pleasure of jolling with Pete and Jackie, and Kenny Leiman. After a few years we decided that we wanted to live here. Everybody said we were mad. But as we
have no kids (by the time Chris and I settled down we didn’t want any), it wasn’t such a big deal. Every year we would come down to the South Eastern Free State
to visit friends staying on a farm in the mountains, which they had bought with a bunch of people. It is in a stunning valley/bowl of mountains, and the
surrounding farms in that valley are also all friends and likeminded people. Chris was by now so totally in love with SA, we decided to buy in to one of the farms.
There is absolutely NO way we would ever have dreamed of coming here if we had to find work/start a business, or stay in Joburg, or any of the major cities.

There is very little crime here, mostly petty theft, cattle rustling, and the Highveld/mountain weather has got to be one of the best climates in the world. This
(triangular) area, between Bethlehem, Golden Gate and Ficksburg, is one of the most beautiful parts of this gorgeous country, and was totally undiscovered until
fairly recently, as it was the very heart of the boere territory, and us longhairs and freaks wouldn’t dare to even drive through. As it is only 3 hours to Joburg, and 4
to Durban, it is starting to get very popular. Find us at 28.43.18 S, 28.01.04 E

We set things in motion and finally in 2005 we sold the hotel and apartments we had bought next door. In December 2006, after a trip to India, we came back to
settle in SA. Meanwhile P & J had already moved to Oz, but we met almost every year in the Royal Natal National Park for 4 days walking in the mountains. Some
years, Sandy (Gaby’s ex living in SF and visiting her Dad in JHB every year) would join us, as would Kenny. Over the years we always kept in touch with Gaby
(though I haven’t seen him for 30 years), Sandy, Kenny, P & J, and others, and saw each other fairly regularly on their visits to Holland and ours to SA. One of the
greatest joys to come out of the whole move has been the contact with the oldest and dearest friends, like Kenny. Although I haven’t seen Martin Joseph since
he came to Amsterdam with Jen and the boys about 20 years ago, talking to him on the phone is like we saw each other last night. I hope we get to visit with
him, or vice versa very soon. The feeling one has with old friends is just so fulfilling, and quite unlike anything one has with even the dearest of newer friends.
One forgets.

We have now been here for a year, and it has been one of the best years of our lives. I am semi retired (whatever that means) which probably is a nice way of
saying an old guy is unemployed (and living off investments which George W is doing his best to gobble up and destroy), and spend our time gardening and
growing things. And almost every single day taking long walks in the mountains. My main interest is still music, and at the insistence of local and European
friends, started DJing again about 6 years ago. We have lots of parties around here, and some of the young guys are (damn good) DJ’s. As I can rock them
better than they can themselves, I am always given my choice of times to play and lengths of set. They call me the Godfather! I also do mixes of different genres
and styles of music which are posted on the internet for free download, and have had almost 30000 downloads so far.

If you want to check them out (though in most cases my friends kids get into the mixes a lot more than their parents!!! – and in some cases like Kenny, then turn
their parents on to them. Its weird when your friends kids think you are really coooool!!) go to either http://www.properlychilled.com/music/dj/session/profile.php?
view=19 where my latest mix is (and 3 others if you click on the “Sessions” button), or to http://MimaRadio.com and click on the “Tonebone” button where you will
find the same 4 mixes plus 6 others. And a picture of me.

Joyce married Hearn Kramer in about 1976, and they had a son, Eugene, in 1978. Hearn was a bit of a pompous poes and didn’t treat Joyce particularly well,
and he died of ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease) 3 years ago. She eventually remarried, an old family friend whose wife had also recently died, Stan Waisbrod, and
they are extremely happy. He is a lovely man and treats her like a queen. She is happy and glowing, and it is the first time in my life I have seen her like this.
Nachas. They live in Morningside in Sandton, her son is currently living in London.

And you still want the long version??

All the best
Tony

Dearest Geoff,

I am sorry I won't be on SKYPE today - I am in the
country and don't have a microphone set up.  Also I
am in bed with a virus (24 hours I think) and feel
awful..

I think this memorial to Pete that you have
organized is a wonderful idea - and it is great that
so many of Pete's friends will unite at one time
around the world and honor him.

It was great to see Tony Van Der Veen's email - Hi
Tony!  I hope your family is well - sometimes I am
nervous to ask how family members are in case
there is bad news that we haven't heard
about.....please send an update!

Jeff Star - hi there - its nice that we do see each
other now and again at family events. How are your
kids and family?

Joe and Jen - it was nice to hear from you when you
were in Baltimore - too bad I didn't have more time
or notice as we could have arranged to have
spoken longer or maybe even seen each other.  My
daughter Romy is at school right near Baltimore, at
the Univ of Maryland. Every now and then I get an
email or FACE BOOK message from Kerry - she is
a doll. Please send love to Yvonne.

Jane!  Wow! Haven't heard from you inages!!! I hear
from Martin and Nancy now and again, and Anne -
but hope you and Glen are doing well and look
forward to hearing about your news!.

Robin, I am sorry I don't know you, but Peter was a
great friend of Geoff's, Joe Starfield and Joe Shoul
-and most Sunday afternoons we would have a
group of friends over at our house! - Remember
Fanta orange Soda and my mom's Ginger Snaps,
Fruit Cake and Crunchies!!!!

Dearest Jacqui, Dave, and Natalie

We were so sad to hear about the passing away of your very dearest
Pete. We are thinking of you during this time and wish you Long Life.

Pete was always very dear to Joe, having been a friend from primary
school and he remembers all the good times they had together, even
stealing his grans car at night without a license, until robin caught them.

They were in their first "business" together with jeff starfield in the
travelling discoteque, and this holds many wonderful memories and
experiences together which they had over 50 years. He was a wonderful
and dear friend and will be very sorely missed by us both.

Our love to you all, take care,

Joe and Jenny

Dearest Jacqui, David and Natalie,

We are so very sad to hear about Pete's passing.

Pete was such a lovely soul. We feel privileged to have had him as a friend.

The years that we spent in South Africa between 1984 and 1990 were coloured by
memories of the times when the Goldins Eliovsons and Segals spent so much time
together. These were some of the most carefree and quality times that we can remember.

It was an honour to have known Pete with his loving nature and expertise in so many
fields from gardening to motorbikes to cars to food to"herbal remedies" and so much
more. Although we have not seen him for so many years his laugh and zest for life are
inprinted on our memories. We loved you Pete, dear friend.

Love,

the Goldins

Howzeet Geoff,

>I want to close for now with the experience I had yesterday ..."re-grouping" after some 38 years  -
was quite emotional.

Really sorry I missed it. Pete and I chatted on Skype at least once a week for the 2 years (as I did
with many old friends) before we moved back to SA, and I really miss it. With my connection the
average webpage takes a few minutes to download, and if its too busy with videos etc, crashes
my connection.

>So be well and I will get those images of your camp days as well as some at the
Zoo Lake ( Remember that day! ???) with a bunch of us scanned for your reminiscing.

That would be fantastic. As I have a very slow connection with a rather expensive capped data
package, please make them as small as possible (KB wise). Also when replying to my emails
please delete my message, ESPECIALLY when there are pictures. 222 KB (your reply) took 10
minutes to download!! If there are a lot of pictures, maybe its better to put them all on a CD and
post it. I can then share them with Kenny, Gaby, Joe, Jackie, etc as they come to visit, or send
them selected ones by email.

PS   Great Photos.... I would like to put them and the letter in its entirety on the web ... yes??

Of course, no problem

PPS.  Love the music on Mimaradio.com

Thanks

WE are all so saddened by Peter’s untimely  passing.

I am his cousin Wendy Eliovson and have lived in
Sydney since 1998.

I have lovely memories of times spent here and also in
Johannesburg when  we met for lunch at Sandton City.

He was on his way an international chocolate
conference and we had a few hours to together. I was
visiting there too.

Pete was always helpful and taught me many things.
He and Robin managed to actually explain to me how
to read a map here in Sydney!!!!!!

Pete knew secret places to park a car which didn’t
cost anything. We went to the Sydney Art Gallery that
day and he knew a short cut over the highway over a
pedestrian bridge into the Domain.

I was most impressed with his efficiency and the way
he knew this huge city.

I spent an interesting afternoon showing Pete Akuna
Bay in Ku-ring ai  forest area, Northern Sydney, where
we walked amongst the boats and yachts exploring
and he expressed how  he would love to own a boat!

He did in fact, obtain a small boat to relax on.

We spent many pleasant evenings with Pete and
Jacqui and other good friends enjoying a Tai meal
or  take- out curry.

Little did we all think that his 60th birthday party in
Randwick would be his last birthday.

Be at peace dear Peter. We will miss hearing your
voice for a friendly chat or advice on the phone and
sharing a good meal together with friends.

I will miss a special cousin who has been taken
away much too soon.

I remember a smaller, slightly plump little boy, a few
years younger than myself and also Robin, closer in
age to me. We played together as children.

We followed our mothers around the garden stopping
to admire the beautiful and varied flowers which Sima
grew. We all learned to love gardening from these
excursions and her expert presence.

I remember we three grandchildren at the Pesach and
New Year dinners with all the family...most now have
passed on. We played under the table or had puppet
shows in our Aunt Naomi’s bedroom.

I will miss you Pete.  My love  and sympathies  go out to
his dear family.

Dear Robin, Jackie and Eliovson family,

I was very saddened and grieved to hear of Pete’s death, as were the rest of the Marcuson clan, on whose behalf I write to you as well as my
own. This very sad news prompts me to think of our distant youths growing up together in Dunkeld West. So long ago but I remember much of it
quite distinctly, even you and me charging around our gardens on tricylcles, no less. They were different more innocent times but they too were
not without sadness. Your dad, Ezra, who I remember well with fondness, was actually the first person I ever knew who had cancer. Before he
was ill he always had a stick of excellent biltong around to hand out pieces in the morning as treats when he and Neil used to share taking us
to school. Do you remember his Nash which we all thought was very spiffing.

It seems a great pity not to have seen Pete for so many years and now he’s gone. He was a straightforward and immensely likable fellow. I
remember his enthusiasm and verve for life – a lovely chap.

This will be a difficult time for your family so far away in Australia but I am sure you will all come through it. Our hearts go out to Jackie for whom
the loss  of Pete will mean a huge life change but such is life and it sure ain’t fair – as we all well know too well.

Thelma who is very ancient and decrepit - a ghost of her former formidable self – was extremely upset to hear both the news of Peter’s illnes,
and yesterday, his passing. She has asked me to send to you in particular – who she best remembers -  her special best wishes and love and
concern for your own medical travails.

Our warmest wishes and sympathy

Dearest  Jacqui,

I am so deeply sad and upset to know the bad news.

Peter was always one of my favourites - almost a son when he
was younger and a good friend in the later years - though we did
not see much of you in Johannesburg when Jeff was not around.

He was really too young to go....I only recently heard about his
illness. and had hoped with you that he would 'make' the
wedding.   Perhaps in the end - he was heppy that he made it to
Byron Bay and had pleasure in the anticipation of the big day?

But what an awful time for you Jacqui - I can imagine the terrible
stress you've been through and I wish you great strength to come
to terms with your loss.

I mourn with you and your children and wish you all long life

With warm and loving thoughts
Joan Starfield
Dear Jacqui,

I was so sorry to hear in an email early this morning that Peter had died on Friday.

I hope that, amongst everything you have had to deal with, that Wendy told you and
Peter that I called last Tuesday (your time).  She told me you were visiting him in
hospice and how much worse he was, and about Nathalie’s wedding on the 17th,
and the next day I received your wedding invitation.

I was booked to go to SA to see my mother next week, but as a result of what Wendy
told me about Pete’s condition, I booked a flight to Sydney to see Peter and you and to
stay for Nathalie’s wedding.  It was while I was trying to log in to the streaming video
of David’s wedding that I received a forward of Robin’s email announcing Peter’s
death.

It is extremely sad that he wasn’t able to make it through the weddings, but I’m sure of
great comfort to him to know that both your kids have found partners that they love –
as it must be for you.  This will be a time of hugely mixed emotions, and you are much
in my thoughts.

Peter was a wonderful friend through my early years since, as he liked to say, we
were knee-high to a grasshopper, and both of you for even longer than that.  It’s been
so long since we were together, but despite the time and distance, I’ve somehow
never felt that we were far apart.

I imagine that it is very helpful for you and your kids to have a lot of family and friends
to support you at this sad time, and I’m sorry that I’m not physically there, but I
certainly am in thought and spirit.

With loving condolences.

Hi Geoff,

I am so sorry that I was not able to join in with the O.G. It must have
been so moving and filled with love for a mutual friend, husband, father,
brother and uncle and so much to many people who knew him.

He as unassuming and the more I think about him I recognise
qualities which grew on one which may not at first have been noticed.

I remember other meetings we had here in Sydney and he spoke of his
plans to bring the Belgium chocolate to Australia. He had a vision
which he put into production and made work.

He travelled and learned so much about this industry and made such a
success. I saw how he pushed his ideas and achieved so much in
building his chocolate business. He can be much admired for this and
as an immigrant I recognise what time and commitment he gave.

I have a few pictures which I will send to you soon. I am very tied up
time wise at the moment due to work, family and a move of home in
two weeks time.

Best regards to you from wendy

Abridged Email exchange between Gabe Lewin
and Geoff Phillips
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Geoff. I had no idea you were in San Diego! I come down there from time to time,
and we should get together sometime.

Must do ... Let me know when you will be coming here next ... I will do the same

Thank you for doing this for Pete. He was one of the nicest guys in the world.
I loved him like a brother.

So did everyone!!   This was the prime reason I chose to initiate the site for Pete.

Refresh my memory about the access to the website to make a contribution.

Photos... memories.... etc.... and I'll get it up on www.cloud9radio.com

Also call me sometime. I am at 530 756 3896 and my cell is 707 718 3264.

     Will do

I no longer have a day job. I quit at the end of last year. I have my business
(see www.claritysound.net). I have had my mortgage paid up for about two
years so I thought it was time.

     Great website

Prior to going to Hawaii I was swamped with tying up loose ends for my business
and then we were gone a month, and getting internet connections was difficult.

Are you also living in Hawaii??

No, technically I do not live in Hawaii... My business is most active in the warmer
months (more outdoor events) so with the day job I could never go on vacation in
the summer months, and I firmly believe in real vacations!

So I have been to Hawaii 7 times and South Africa once, and Costa Rica once.
They say people who take their vacations and do real vacations (not just family
visits which can be stressful) tend to be healthier and live longer.
 Actually
there is probably a correlation with those people also not doing lots of
overtime and taking work home etc. which is also a killer...Now that I have quit
the day job I can go for longer, hence the whole month in Maui and Kauai..

Next year I may go to South Africa for January and February!  After all
accommodation there is relatively cheap. There is the Kenny arms,
the Joe
Shull Sheraton, the Tonebone Inn, and the camp parks in J'bay and Plett!
Last time we were in Plett we stayed in a plush place with 2
-1/2 bathrooms,
kitchen dining room, two bedrooms etc. for only $60 per night for three of us!
That included a fantastic breakfast as well!  The car rental was quite expensive
though..  You must play that sax! It is good for the soul.  I still play and sing. I
actually played an hour slot at the Yolo County fair last  year!  I got quite a good
reaction. I play the kind of stuff that older guys really like, like "riders in the sky"..

Do you remember the Discoteers?

Off course... started by Jeff Starfield, Pete, Joe... and even me there for a bit...
It was my Mother who designed the art for the Discoteers name...

How is your sister Susan?

Great ... in and out from New York on a regular basis ...

Do you still play trumpet?

Wow!  what a memory... Not since you saw me doing it last -
I did change it for the saxophone which I still have and play
for about 3 minutes every 4 years!!

What do you do in San Diego?

I specialize in Long-Term Care (LTC) for Baby-boomers and Seniors

Usually if I find I have a free weekend at some point in the summer, I buzz
down to San Diego to catch some beach action.

Let me know the dates you plan and we'll connect for sure.... it's
only been over 40 years!!   ;-)

Take care .. Geoff

Only good things Gabe... and it will be great to see you again

Hi Guys,

The attached photos are scanned from photocopies that I have.

I know that the quality is not very good and I was wondering if Joe
or Jeff have the original photos to add to the webpage?   I don’t
remember where we got the photocopies from.

How amazing that Geoff’s Mom did the artwork and the ‘boys’
did the business!

Those were the days…………….

Life in Sydney(as everywhere else in the world) just carries on
day by day and the weeks pass by.  It is already two months since
Pete passed away and tomorrow  would have been his 61st
birthday.

We miss him so very much.
With love to all
